District Health Project on Dementia 2022/23
The 10 Rotary Clubs of Area 4 of RI District 3450 are organizing a District Health Project on Dementia with Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council Limited in the Rotary Year 2022/23. The project will focus on the care of Dementia patients and the needs of their carers in the community. This is a continuaion of the project started in 2019.
Prevalence of dementia is about 10% in elderly over 65 years old and 30% in those over 80 years old. It is estimated that the population of demented elders in 2039 will be 300,000, which is 3 times more than that in 2009. The cognitive impairment would affect their activities of daily living with other behavioral issues.
Other than affecting the elders, the carers are also facing tremendous pressure in taking care of the demented elders. Through this project, we would like to arouse the public awareness on this syndrome and the needs of the carers. We will continue the home visits to elders and their carers as we did in the past years to conduct preliminary cognitive assessment to screen those in need as well as administering a questionnaire to understand the needs of their carers. In addition, based on the survey we conducted last year, we understand that the carers of Dementia patients are under pressure in their caretaking process. Hence this year, we will include an activity day to provide technical and emotional support for carers. Various activities tentatively including sharing of knowledge and relaxation classes will be conducted.
